The Polish Ministry of Environment has just launched a project to support the development of Urban Adaptation Plans in the 44 biggest cities in Poland.

The kick-off conference of the "44 MPA" project was held on 2nd March 2017 in Warsaw. The Polish Ministry of the Environment will provide local governments with organisational and financial support. Supported by the European Commission, the project will be implemented in 2017 and 2018 with a total budget of around EUR 7 million (85% coming from the EU Cohesion fund, 15% from national government).

The consortium that will be implementing the project is led by the Institute of Environmental Protection - National Research Institute, and composed of the Institute of Meteorology and Water Management - National Research Institute, Institute for Ecology of Industrial Areas and Arcadis (design and consultancy for natural and built assets). They will provide the data necessary for cities to carry out their climate vulnerability and risks assessments. A common methodology will allow the cities to benchmark and compare results.

"44 MPA" will follow a participatory approach to discuss adaptation measures with citizens, NGOs and experts. The project aims to raise awareness amongst citizens about the impacts of climate change. Specific training sessions on communication will notably be organised for cities.
