La Convention des Maires pour le climat et l'énergie est un mouvement politique unique en son genre, piloté par des maires.
Le Conseil politique de la Convention européenne des Maires donne aux dirigeants locaux et régionaux l'occasion de jouer un rôle plus important dans la conception et l'orientation de l'initiative. Les membres du Conseil promeuvent également la création de cadres propices aux actions locales en faveur du climat et de l'énergie au niveau national et européen, en sensibilisant les décideurs européens et nationaux aux besoins locaux.
Ce Conseil des Maires a pour objectif de discuter des orientations stratégiques de l'initiative, de veiller à ce qu'elle réponde au mieux aux besoins des villes et qu'elle soit davantage adaptée à leurs attentes, et de favoriser le dialogue entre la Communauté européenne de la Convention et les institutions de l'UE.
Le Conseil politique est composé de 7 maires et élus locaux.
